ROSGT Chapter 8: What a Bunch of Poor Kids!
Simple dishes were laid out on the table. Ye Ling, Ye Chui's younger sister, was still at her part-time job and hadn't returned yet. Ye Chui quietly ate dinner with his parents.
His father, Ye Haishan, looked tired. He was a middle-aged man with a standard square face that usually carried a stern authority, but now his temples were slightly graying. He had aged quickly over the past six months.
Ye Haishan ate quickly, as if racing against time, a habit he had developed over the years.
"Haishan, slow down. You don't have to work tonight. If you keep eating like this, you'll ruin your stomach," Ye Chui's mother, Zhou Yayun, always reminded him when she saw him eating this way.
Ye Haishan smiled and slowed down, but soon reverted to his wolfing pace.
He finished his meal quickly and leaned back in his chair, enjoying a cigarette. Smoking was bad for his health, so Zhou Yayun only allowed him to smoke one after dinner each day. Haishan savored this moment of smoking.
With a cigarette between his fingers, Haishan glanced at his son in the wheelchair, his eyes darkening briefly.
They still didn't have enough money for the surgery to treat his son's leg injury...
"Chui." Haishan exhaled a puff of smoke and spoke. "What have you been busy with lately? Your mom says you stay cooped up in your room all day. That’s not good; you should go out more."
It was clear Haishan was worried Ye Chui might develop depression—back when he first became paralyzed, Ye Chui had frequently been suicidal.
Ye Chui smiled and said, "Dad, don’t worry. I go out for a walk every day." He paused and then continued, "Dad, you don’t have to work so hard. I can make some money online. We might be able to save enough for the surgery soon."
"How much can you make online? Don’t worry, your dad is still strong. I won’t get worn out." Haishan laughed heartily, then asked seriously, "How are you making money online?"
"I’m a programming major. I can create software and sell the rights. It might not be much, but it can help," Ye Chui explained.
In this world, Ye Chui had majored in programming at university. He inherited this knowledge, which enabled him to create the game Link-Up.
The programming language in this world was completely different from the previous one. As Huaxia was the dominant power, both economically and technologically, the programming language was fully in Chinese, called Cangjie.
Compared to languages like C++ and Java from the previous world, Cangjie was more flexible, powerful, and user-friendly.
Ye Chui had learned Cangjie programming in university, mastering basic programming skills.
(Note: Programming languages are computer languages. Simply put, computer systems, software, and games are all developed using various programming languages. But, of course, Cangjie programming language doesn’t exist, so don’t take it too seriously…)
"Haha, that’s great! Being able to program software is a talent. I’ll see if I can find you a programming job later," Haishan said, laughing.
He believed in his son's ability to develop software but doubted he could make millions from it.
Ye Chui didn't explain further. In a while, selling the rights to Link-Up would bring in enough money to convince his parents.
Over the next three days, Link-Up caused a sensation on the internet. Almost every software forum was talking about it.
Even the phrase "Have you played Link-Up?" had become a common greeting online.
Some websites even hailed Link-Up as a groundbreaking achievement in entertainment software.
A software expert commented, "This simple and crude software has an irresistible charm. From the birth of optical brains to now, such charm has never been seen in other software. It’s foreseeable that no other software will reach this level of allure for a long time—unless this mysterious Professor X creates another miracle."
Ye Chui could only chuckle at the hype.
What a bunch of poor kids!
If they were this amazed by Link-Up, what would they do if he released masterpieces like CS, Legend of Sword and Fairy, Diablo, or Warcraft? They might die of happiness!
In three days, Link-Up’s downloads on the Software Alliance exceeded ten million, bringing Ye Chui an income of one hundred thousand yuan.
This far surpassed the speed at which other popular software had risen!
The current top-ranked software had taken over a week to reach ten million downloads, but Ye Chui did it in three days. It was already certain that Link-Up would break the record.
However, the download rate for Link-Up began to slow down.
The increase in downloads followed a parabolic trajectory, and by the third day, it had peaked.
At this point, Ye Chui decided to start selecting a company to sell the rights to.
He had a list of seven names, with the first being SB Optical Brain Systems Company.
SB stands for Sha Bi, which is an insult in the other world, but here it hadn’t yet become synonymous with stupidity.
SB Optical Brain Systems Company was a renowned optical brain company worldwide.
One-third of the world’s optical brains ran on the SB system developed by this company.
Among all the companies that had contacted Ye Chui for a rights deal, SB was the most prestigious, which is why Ye Chui chose it as the first company to negotiate with—a big company would be more generous.
Moreover, joining this company would make it easier for Ye Chui to realize his ambition of establishing a gaming empire.
Following the instructions in the backend messages, Ye Chui used his optical brain to call the number provided by SB.
The call was quickly connected.
A man's voice came through, "Hello, this is SB…"
