Chapter 79: Street Fighter Tournament
"I really like this daughter-in-law," Zhou Yayun whispered to Ye Chui.
Ye Chui blushed and said to his mother, "Nan Nan and I haven't developed to that stage yet."
"Then you mustn't let her slip away. You have to work hard to win her over," Zhou Yayun continued. "Where else can you find such a beautiful, capable, and obedient girlfriend?"
"That's right, brother. You have to make sure you win sister-in-law over," Ye Ling added. "Then let's see who dares to bully you!"
Ye Chui broke out in a sweat, not expecting his mom and sister to be so fond of a strong, violent girl...
Sun Yan was just a minor villain. Fang Nan had kicked him out of the office. He scrambled to his feet and ran away, his face filled with fear.
Fang Nan, after a brief pause, smiled sweetly and walked over to Ye Chui, giving off a shy, first-love vibe...
But Ye Chui noticed that the other employees in the office couldn't help but gulp.
Ye Chui smiled wryly, thinking that Fang Nan's actions might have served as a bit of a deterrent in the magazine office.
He hadn't expected someone like Sun Yan to be in the small magazine office. Fortunately, he found out; otherwise, with his mother's kind nature, she might have been bullied.
Ye Chui then said to his mother, "Mom, people like him are useless in the magazine office. Don't keep people like that around in the future."
Zhou Yayun looked at Ye Chui with a peculiar expression. Ye Chui had always been gentle and never so decisive, but it seemed like his personality had changed since the accident. Was this also a result of the car accident?
Regardless, this change was a good thing.
Zhou Yayun nodded and said with some helplessness, "I understand what you’re saying, but our magazine is just getting started. Everything has to begin anew. The other aspects are fine, but we have no sales channels for the magazine. I kept him around because of his connections. Now that he’s gone, how will we sell our magazine?"
"Sales, huh?" This issue also troubled Ye Chui. But after a moment of thought, his eyes lit up with an idea. "Mom, let’s proceed with the magazine’s production as planned. Print 10,000 copies for the first issue. I'll handle the sales."
Hearing Ye Chui’s confident tone, Zhou Yayun couldn’t help but ask how he planned to do it. Ye Ling and Fang Nan were also curious.
Ye Chui smiled and said, "I need to discuss this plan with someone. I’ll let you know once it's settled."
Magazines are a commodity, and selling them is an art. Ye Chui, though not a professional in this field in his previous life, had learned a lot by observing others. He had a few tricks up his sleeve that could work wonders in this world.
Ye Chui then took out the sample of the completed magazine and showed it to everyone in the office.
Seeing the novel format of comics, everyone found it very interesting. The stories of Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho, and others were already exciting. While older people like Zhou Yayun were mildly interested, Ye Ling was completely captivated and loved it.
"Brother, did you come up with these stories? You’re amazing," she said excitedly, looking at Ye Chui with admiration.
"Chui Chui has many more great stories," Fang Nan said with a smile. Being with Ye Chui always brought her pleasant surprises.
Zhou Yayun looked through the magazine sample on the optical computer and agreed with Ye Chui, "I don’t read comics much, but I can tell that this format is very engaging and enjoyable. Our magazine should sell well."
"Of course," Ye Chui laughed, thinking about his marketing strategy and whether it would work.
...
"A Street Fighter Tournament?"
In a restaurant in Tian Di Mall, Zhang Xing, the owner of Golden Sun Entertainment, exclaimed in surprise after hearing Ye Chui’s proposal. "A competition for playing a game? I’ve never heard of such a thing, but since games are new, this sounds interesting."
Ye Chui sat across from Zhang Xing. It was already evening. After leaving the magazine office, he had immediately called Zhang Xing to discuss something. Zhang Xing was still at the entertainment center, so Ye Chui and Fang Nan came over.
"Street Fighter doesn’t have a versus mode. We can compete to see who clears the levels the fastest. The winner will be the one who completes the game in the shortest time," Ye Chui explained. "Such a tournament will definitely attract a lot of people, boosting your entertainment center's business."
Zhang Xing's eyes sparkled. He wasn’t carried away by excitement but asked, "What’s in it for you, Professor Cha?"
"Of course, there are benefits," Ye Chui didn’t hide. "I’m doing this to promote my magazine."
"You’ve started a magazine?" Zhang Xing was surprised.
"Yes, but I’m new to the magazine industry and have no sales channels. That’s why I thought of this Street Fighter Tournament," Ye Chui said with a smile. "Anyone who participates in the tournament and can clear the game with one life will get a free copy of my magazine. The first issue is completely free as an advertisement. I want to use this tournament to build a reputation."
Zhang Xing frowned, "Your idea is good, but I’ve heard of free giveaways before. Are you sure people will want to buy the second issue after reading the first?"
"Ha, I’m confident in my magazine’s quality," Ye Chui said with a confident smile.
"Alright then," Zhang Xing laughed, raising his glass. "Professor Cha, you’re young and promising. Here’s to a successful Street Fighter Tournament."
"To a successful collaboration."
Ye Chui clinked his glass with Zhang Xing’s.
This Street Fighter Tournament could be considered the beginning of e-sports. After coming to this world, besides developing games, Ye Chui also wanted to organize e-sports competitions. In his previous life, he had been a professional gamer and loved the e-sports arena.
Street Fighter 1 wasn’t suitable for e-sports, but once Street Fighter 2 and King of Fighters were developed, e-sports could fully take shape.
For now, the Street Fighter Tournament was just to promote his magazine.
After discussing the tournament details with Zhang Xing, Ye Chui and Fang Nan left around 9 PM.
"Miss Fang Nan," Zhang Xing called out as they were leaving the restaurant, "May I ask, I feel like I’ve seen you before. Have we met somewhere?"
"Ah!?" Fang Nan’s face changed slightly. "No, maybe you’ve seen my photos online?"
"Heh, maybe," Zhang Xing said with a smile, seeming to let it go.
Ye Chui noticed Fang Nan’s expression and sensed something. It was clear Fang Nan was hiding something.
As they walked back, Ye Chui couldn’t help but ask, "Nan Nan, were you lying just now?"
Pushing Ye Chui’s wheelchair, Fang Nan walked slowly and said, "I might have seen him at some business gatherings before, but that was a long time ago. Now, Fang Xi and I have left that life."
"What kind of life did you and Fang Xi have before?" Ye Chui couldn’t help but ask.
Ye Chui had known Fang Nan and Fang Xi for a while but had never gotten clear answers about their past. Fang Xi always gave vague replies, seemingly hiding something. Was there a secret about their background?
Ye Chui glanced at Fang Nan, noticing she didn’t want to discuss it further.
Everyone has secrets they don’t want others to know.
Ye Chui smiled slightly. If she didn’t want to tell him now, he wouldn’t force it. He would find out eventually.
He stretched in his wheelchair and changed the subject, "Nan Nan, I’m taking Ling to the recording studio tomorrow. Do you want to come?"
"Of course! 'Ningxia' has a bit of my effort in it too. I want to see Ling sing it live," Fang Nan said with a lively smile.
