Chapter 78: I Like This Daughter-in-law
"This is the office of the magazine."
Upon arriving at the office building where King of Comics was located, Ye Chui’s mother, Zhou Yayun, led Ye Chui and Fang Nan into the magazine’s office.
During this time, Zhou Yayun had been handling the magazine's affairs. Before Ye Chui’s paralysis, she had extensive work experience and managed things adeptly. Choosing the office was no exception, and she handled it perfectly.
The office occupied about 150 square meters. There weren’t many employees, which distinguished King of Comics from other magazines. Most of the magazine's staff were editors because handling manuscripts was crucial. However, since Ye Chui produced all the content for King of Comics, the editing process was unnecessary. Even the position of chief editor was handled by Ye Chui, though Zhou Yayun held the title nominally.
In this magazine, the chief editor was essentially the boss.
Besides Zhou Yayun, there were only five employees in the magazine, responsible for the publication and printing of the magazine. Zhou Yayun also had a personal assistant.
"Brother, Mom, when I graduate, I want to work at the magazine too," Ye Ling said. She had come along with Zhou Yayun today and was curiously looking around the office for the first time.
Ye Chui gently patted his sister’s head. "Don’t you want to be a big star? Why do you want to work at the magazine?"
"Becoming a big star is not that easy," Ye Ling said, pouting slightly.
"Silly girl, if I say you’ll be a big star, you will be. You sang that song, 'Ningxia,' so well. Those record companies are blind if they can’t see your talent," Ye Chui said with a smile. "By the way, Ling, are you free tomorrow? I’ve arranged for a recording studio. We can go and record your song."
"I’m free tomorrow," Ye Ling quickly replied, her face flushed with excitement.
Every girl her age dreams of becoming a star, but she never expected to start realizing that dream so soon.
"With Ling’s personality, can she really become a star?" Zhou Yayun laughed lightly. Seeing Ye Ling’s dissatisfied look, she added with a smile, "But it’s good to let Ling try. Your father and I really enjoy listening to 'Ningxia' that she sings at home."
Hearing this, Ye Ling smiled sweetly, confident in her singing ability.
As the group entered the office, Zhou Yayun pushed open the door and went in first.
"Editor Zhou," a few voices greeted her inside.
Fang Nan was pushing Ye Chui’s wheelchair when Ye Ling suddenly whispered mischievously, "Brother, you brought Sister Nan here today. Why not introduce her properly to Mom?"
Earlier, Ye Chui had introduced Fang Nan as a colleague without elaborating, prompting Ye Ling’s question.
"What’s there to introduce..." Fang Nan said shyly in a low voice.
Ye Chui chuckled, thinking there was no rush for such matters.
Although his mother hadn’t made any specific comments about Fang Nan, Ye Chui noticed the approving smile on her face. It was clear she liked Fang Nan.
—With such a beautiful girl who seemed gentle and elegant, like a sweet first love, there was no reason not to be satisfied. As for the future... they could take it one step at a time.
Ye Chui, Fang Nan, and Ye Ling entered the office.
The five employees were already aware of Ye Chui’s visit. They knew he was the actual owner of the magazine and treated him with respect. However, seeing him in a wheelchair made their expressions subtly change before they quickly masked it.
"Chui, this is Zhang Bo. He handles the finances. This is Li Ming. He’s an old employee from the original King Magazine, responsible for proofreading and publishing. He’s very experienced in this area..." Zhou Yayun introduced each employee to Ye Chui, finally reaching the last one.
When she introduced this employee, Ye Chui noticed his mother frowning slightly before continuing, "This is Sun Yan, another old employee from King Magazine. He’s in charge of sales and has connections with major bookstores and distribution agencies. He’s indispensable to the magazine."
Ye Chui noted that his mother’s tone emphasized the word "indispensable."
Looking at Sun Yan, Ye Chui saw that while others stood up during introductions, Sun Yan remained seated. He was a man in his thirties with a certain air of arrogance. When he noticed Ye Chui looking at him, he chuckled, "So, you’re Ye Chui. Didn’t expect you to be in a wheelchair. Truly resilient."
Hearing this, Ye Chui’s expression turned cold. He detected a hint of mockery in Sun Yan’s words.
Zhou Yayun’s face also darkened as she scolded, "Sun Yan, watch your mouth!"
"Don’t get upset. I meant no harm," Sun Yan said nonchalantly. "Now that I’ve met the big boss, there are a few things I need to clarify."
His attitude made Zhou Yayun’s face even more uncomfortable, while Ye Chui remained calm and asked, "What do you want to say?"
"I’ve been in the magazine business for quite some time. Since you’ve bought King Magazine, you’ll need to listen to me regarding its content. I hear you want to serialize some comics? I think that’s a bad idea. Comics are nothing special. I know some good comic artists. If you’re willing to pay, I can get you some quality work."
As he spoke, Sun Yan adjusted himself to a more comfortable position and showed a greedy smile, "Of course, if I introduce you to them, you should show some appreciation."
"We had an agreement before. Don’t think you can hike up your price now!" Zhou Yayun scolded, unusually angry.
"Editor Zhou, I’m just thinking about the magazine’s future," Sun Yan said, unfazed. "Don’t forget, our magazine’s sales depend on my connections."
Clearly, Sun Yan was confident because of his network. Selling the magazine required connections with major bookstores and distribution systems. Without these, it would be hard to sell anything. Zhou Yayun had mentioned him as indispensable because of this. His arrogance stemmed from knowing Ye Chui was new and lacking connections, assuming he could push for more.
However, after hearing him out, Ye Chui suddenly laughed.
"I thought your voice was familiar. Now I remember," Ye Chui said with a smile. "You were the one who answered my call when I first contacted King Magazine, weren’t you?"
Sun Yan admitted, "Yes, so what?"
"I knew it," Ye Chui nodded. "Your attitude was so poor that I decided then that if I bought the magazine, I’d fire you first. I later reconsidered, thinking I shouldn’t be impulsive. But now I see I was wrong..."
Ye Chui’s expression turned icy as he glared at Sun Yan. "Who do you think you are, threatening me?"
"You..." Sun Yan’s face changed drastically, showing a fierce look. "Don’t you want to sell your magazine?"
"Damn, do you think you own the distribution network?" Ye Chui said coldly. "I kept you around out of respect, but if you’re so ungrateful, get out. Go show off your connections to some other magazine. King Magazine sells only 5,000 copies; what connections do you have? Get lost!"
"You... You’ll regret this..." Sun Yan, completely unsettled, pointed a trembling finger at Ye Chui.
"Nannan," Ye Chui turned slightly, "please see our guest out."
"Sure, Chui Chui," Fang Nan responded without hesitation.
Already annoyed by Sun Yan’s words, she was more than ready to act. She walked over, grabbed Sun Yan by the collar, and dragged him out. Despite his larger build, Sun Yan couldn’t resist and was pulled to the door, screaming.
At the door, Sun Yan clung to the frame, refusing to let go. Fang Nan smiled slightly, stepped back, then executed a spinning kick, sending Sun Yan flying out the door with a scream.
Inside the office, everyone except Ye Chui was stunned. The girl who had just been a gentle goddess had transformed into a fierce tomboy in an instant, effortlessly kicking out a grown man.
Zhou Yayun leaned close to Ye Chui and whispered with a smile, "Chui, I really like this daughter-in-law."
