Chapter 19: I Did Offend an Idiot

An illusion, it must have been an illusion!

That robust “What the heck!” couldn’t have possibly come from this delicate beauty.

Ye Cui reassured himself.

How could a girl who evokes a faint feeling of first love be so crude?

Fang Nan, looking fresh and pure, stood beside Ye Cui again, her voice soft and full of admiration. “Professor X, you’re amazing. You can come up with such great ideas from just one photo.”

Fang Xi, the chubby guy, couldn’t help but want to say something, but a fierce glare from his sister made him wisely shut his mouth.

Ye Cui quickly recovered from his surprise. Though he wasn’t a boastful person, he couldn’t help but show off a little in front of a beautiful woman. So, he smiled and said, “There are many games that can be made with photos. Spot the Difference is just one of them.”

“You’re talking big!” Jian Fan seized the opportunity to mock him. “If you’re so capable, name another one.”

“Alright.” Ye Cui glanced at Jian Fan, then said calmly, “For example, we could create a game called Picture Puzzle. Divide a picture into sixteen equal squares, remove one piece, and allow the remaining pieces to be moved freely. Then scramble the arrangement, and the player’s task is to restore the original image.”

This puzzle game had always been Ye Cui’s favorite when he was a kid.

Hearing Ye Cui’s explanation, Jian Fan was once again inevitably shocked.

If he weren’t standing on the opposing side right now, he might have even shouted, “I admire you!”

But Fang Xi and Fang Nan weren’t stingy with their admiration. Their eyes sparkled with excitement; Ye Cui’s casual ideas were amazing.

Ye Cui suddenly remembered something and chuckled to himself. “Speaking of photo games, how could I forget the famous ‘Voyeur’ series? But... better not mention that.”

(P.S.: If you don’t know ‘Voyeur,’ you can search it on Baidu...)

“So, can I join your studio now?” Ye Cui then solemnly asked Jian Fan.

Jian Fan’s expression changed slightly. Ye Cui’s demonstration just now had made it clear that he was a rare talent. Having him in the studio would undoubtedly boost their business.

But the more capable Ye Cui was, the less Jian Fan could tolerate him staying.

This studio was his creation. If Ye Cui was so outstanding, wouldn’t he overshadow him?

“No way...” Jian Fan said coldly.

“What the heck...” Fang Nan almost cursed but managed to hold back, angrily questioning Jian Fan, “Professor X has already shown his skill. What more do you want?”

“Fang Nan, don’t forget he has offended the SB people!” Jian Fan had to use his trump card.

“I did offend an idiot...” Ye Cui thought to himself, annoyed.

Jian Fan continued, “Our studio mainly makes money by contracting with major optical computer companies to develop custom software or sell original software. SB is one of the three major optical computer companies. If they blacklist us, how can we survive in this industry?”

Jian Fan had hit the nail on the head. Bringing Ye Cui into the studio could risk SB’s wrath, cutting off their financial lifeline.

“Then we could focus entirely on developing games in the future.” Fang Xi hesitantly suggested.

He enjoyed making games; it was much more fun than developing dull enterprise management software.

Fang Nan added, “Besides, SB is such a big company. They wouldn’t go out of their way to make things difficult for a small studio like ours, would they?”

“As the head of the studio, I must be responsible for its operations!” Jian Fan adopted a high-minded stance. “Most importantly, don’t forget, Professor X bet with an SB expert, and Fang Xi got involved too. Whether or not we offend SB, everyone knows about the bet now. If Professor X loses, our studio’s reputation will be tarnished too.”

Ye Cui frowned, “Listening to you, it sounds like I’m destined to lose this bet.”

“Am I wrong?” Jian Fan sneered. “Linking Tiles succeeded largely because no similar software had ever appeared before. Now, even if your Spot the Difference or Picture Puzzle games are more fun, surpassing Linking Tiles is another matter.”

Jian Fan had a point, but it was something Ye Cui had already considered.

Ye Cui said seriously, “Since you say that, let’s make a deal. My second game—of course, not Spot the Difference or Picture Puzzle—will be ready to release by tomorrow. Whether it can surpass Linking Tiles will be clear then. If I win the bet with the SB expert, I’ll stay in the studio. How about it?”

“Alright, it’s a deal!” Jian Fan agreed.

He was skeptical about Ye Cui winning the bet with the SB expert. Linking Tiles’ success was too much of a fluke. It was impossible for Ye Cui to replicate it.

But soon, Jian Fan would realize his mistake, a big mistake.

Because by then, Ye Cui would have a formidable nickname: The Miracle Maker.

With that settled, Ye Cui saw no reason to stay. “In that case, I’ll head back now.”

“Brother X, I’ll see you out!” Fang Xi pushed Ye Cui out, but Fang Nan didn’t follow.

Her face was not pleasant. After Ye Cui left, she coldly looked at Jian Fan.

It was the first time Jian Fan had seen Fang Nan so angry. He quickly grabbed a drink from the side room, handed it to her, and said with a smile, “Fang Nan, what’s with that look? I’m doing this for the good of the studio...”

“You better be!”

Fang Nan took the drink but didn’t open it. Instead, she squeezed it hard.

With a squish, the entire drink can exploded.

The foam splashed all over Jian Fan.

Fang Nan was furious, and the consequences were serious!

She said coldly to Jian Fan, “Regardless of your reasons for not wanting Professor X to join the studio, if you make excuses after he wins the bet with SB, Fang Xi and I will leave the studio.”

Jian Fan’s face changed drastically. Wiping the drink off himself, he quickly said, “Fang Nan, how can you say that? I’m doing this for the good of the studio...”

“Save it!”

Fang Nan coldly left him with that line and turned to her room—damn, the drink splashed all over her too...

Watching Fang Nan enter her room, Jian Fan’s face turned from stiff to cold.

“Damn it, for a guy you’ve just met, you’d say something like that... Damn it, I won’t let this Professor X have an easy time!”
