Chapter 60: Why Are You So Late?

“The Third World War had a severe impact on all countries, but Huaxia was one of the few that remained relatively unaffected,” Fang Nan continued to explain. “Actually, America wasn't the most severely affected; that would be Japan.”

“That’s right,” Fang Xi chimed in. “Back then, there was even a restaurant with a sign at the entrance that said, ‘No Japanese and dogs allowed.’”

“Really?” Ye Chui was surprised, seeing that Fang Xi seemed to be speaking the truth and not lying.

Fang Nan added, “Yes, it’s true. Because of that sign, many people protested and condemned this unfair treatment.”

In another world, Chinese people had encountered such insults, as shown in the classic scene from Bruce Lee’s movies. Ye Chui remembered it vividly. But to see such a sign in this world, with Chinese people replaced by Japanese…

Ye Chui continued, “Protests make sense. Such a sign is indeed very offensive.”

“Very offensive,” Fang Xi laughed. “Forget about the Japanese, but why can’t dogs go in?”

Ye Chui was silent for ten seconds.

“Pfft—”

Then he burst out laughing. So the protests weren’t for the Japanese but for the dogs?

This... was too funny.

Of course, seeing Fang Xi’s smile, Ye Chui knew he was joking to make them laugh, so he didn’t take it to heart after laughing.

(Footnote: Not sure why this joke came to mind, just laugh and don’t take it seriously.)

Fang Nan and Fang Xi continued modifying Tetris.

Ye Chui didn’t want to bother Bai Miyun with this. He hoped she could quickly finish writing the novel. The Tianwang Magazine he bought was ready to launch under his mother Zhou Yayun’s management, possibly as soon as next week. Ye Chui hoped Bai Miyun could finish the novel before the first issue went on sale.

Serializing the novel in the magazine would also promote Street Fighter.

The studio returned to a bustling development atmosphere.

At 3 PM, Ye Chui received a message from Roberta. He had arrived at the station.

So, Ye Chui asked Fang Xi to pick him up. Given he was a foreigner, it should be easy to recognize him.

Fang Xi agreed and left. It was hard to get a cab in the suburbs, so he took a bus to the city and then a taxi, which took over half an hour.

The chubby Fang Xi climbed out of the taxi and looked around, soon spotting a foreigner with a bag: tall, handsome, about twenty-four or twenty-five years old, with golden curly hair. He wore slightly worn jeans and a t-shirt, but they looked stylish on him. His deep-set eyes constantly scanned the surroundings, and many passing women whispered and blushed.

He held a sign with the crookedly written words “Professor Cha.”

Clearly, this was Roberta.

“I hate people who are thinner and more handsome than me,” Fang Xi muttered before walking over.

Seeing Fang Xi, Roberta quickly realized this might be his contact and hurried over.

As they approached each other, Roberta, who looked like an international model, impatiently spoke first—

“Why are you so late?”

“Hello, I’m Luobotcha, the creator of Building Blocks,” Roberta said respectfully to Ye Chui when Fang Xi brought him over.

Ye Chui was astonished, and Fang Nan was also a bit dumbfounded. Roberta’s heavy accent was thicker than that of a country bumpkin.

Fang Xi, holding back laughter, explained to Ye Chui, “Professor Cha, I asked him about it on the way here. He said he always wanted to come to Huaxia and paid a lot to learn Huaxia dialect from a Huaxia person. He thought he was learning the most authentic Huaxia language, but it turns out he was scammed…”

Fang Xi was laughing so hard he was almost out of breath.

Ye Chui and Fang Nan couldn’t help but burst into laughter. This quirky situation was just too funny.

Roberta knew about his accent problem, and while he was a bit frustrated, he admired Professor Cha so much that he kept his displeasure to himself.

After a while, once Ye Chui and the others had laughed enough, Ye Chui got to the point, “Roberta, I wanted to meet you to buy the copyright for Building Blocks from you.”

“The copyright for Building Blocks?” Roberta was surprised. “Professor Cha, why do you want this game? It’s a total failure. Several companies rejected it.”

Ye Chui took a deep breath—hearing a stylish model-like person speaking in such a thick dialect was a strong contrast that was hard to endure.

Suppressing his urge to laugh, he continued, “I see potential in your game. Sell me the copyright. Name your price.”

Roberta looked at Ye Chui, seeing he was serious, and then said, “Professor Cha, you really want it? I’ll give it to you for free, but I have one condition.”

“A condition? What is it?”

“Can I join your studio?” Roberta asked eagerly. “I’m really good with computers.”

“Join our studio?” Ye Chui thought for a moment and then said, “Alright, we need people right now. You’ll be on probation for a month with a salary of three thousand yuan. How about that?”

Since Roberta developed Building Blocks, his programming skills should be fine, and he seemed like a fun person. Giving him a chance wouldn’t hurt.

As for the salary, Ye Chui decided to give him a fixed amount instead of a percentage.

Three thousand yuan was a lot for a foreigner—equivalent to over twenty thousand dollars.

(Footnote: Just a bit of imagination.)

“Three thousand yuan salary? Oh my god!” Roberta was genuinely moved by the offer, indicating he probably hadn’t been doing well before.

Fang Xi, grinning, reminded him, “Roberta, Huaxia people don’t say ‘oh my god.’ Didn’t your Huaxia language teacher tell you? ‘Oh my god’ in Huaxia is ‘my goodness.’ Come on, repeat after me.”

“My goodness,” Roberta repeated, sincerely, and even gave Fang Xi a grateful look.

Ye Chui and Fang Nan almost laughed themselves to tears again.

Ye Chui then signed a simple electronic contract with Roberta, officially making him a member of Wolverine Game Studio.

It was already evening, so Ye Chui invited everyone out for a big meal, and the laughter continued throughout the evening—Roberta was funnier than a professional comedian.

Roberta was very friendly, and his heavy accent made him endearing. He quickly bonded with Ye Chui.

“Our first game will be released the day after tomorrow. Thanks to everyone’s hard work this past week, I’ve decided to give out bonuses—five thousand yuan each. Roberta, even though you’re new, you’ll get a bonus too.”

Ye Chui, a bit tipsy and in high spirits, announced this with a smile.

“Ah!?” Fang Nan and Fang Xi were used to Ye Chui’s generosity, but Roberta was stunned. He didn’t expect Ye Chui to be so generous.

He remembered what he had learned about Huaxia etiquette and decided it was best to be polite.

So Roberta said with a smile, “I don’t really care about the bonus, Professor Cha. Even if you didn’t give me a bonus, I’d still work hard for you.”

“Great, I like your attitude,” Ye Chui said, a bit drunk. “For your attitude, I’ll give you an extra five thousand yuan.”

Roberta was overjoyed, thinking that politeness indeed worked well in Huaxia. Then he had another idea and humbly said, “It’s not about the money. Even though I don’t have a place to stay, I’ll still work hard for you.”

“You don’t have a place to stay?” Ye Chui was alarmed. “That won’t do. Fang Xi, isn’t the small building next to our studio still vacant? Rent it for Roberta.”

“Sure, Professor Cha,” Fang Xi agreed casually.

Roberta’s eyes lit up with joy, thinking it was really easy to make it big in Huaxia. He touched the old portable Guangnao on his wrist and said, “It’s not even about the house. I came all the way to Huaxia, and plane tickets are so expensive. I might not be able to go back more than once a year. I came here just to work for you, Professor Cha.”

“You can’t go back often? That’s terrible. I’ll cover your plane tickets and travel expenses. You can go back as many times as you want,” Ye Chui declared.

Roberta was even happier, thinking it was really easy to get ahead in Huaxia. He continued, “Plane tickets aren’t a big deal. I’ve been using this old portable Guangnao for years, but I’m still dedicated to working for you, Professor Cha.”

“Your portable Guangnao is so old? You should have said so earlier. I’ll get you a new one,” Ye Chui said.

“My goodness!”

Roberta’s heart raced, thinking he was about to make it big. He continued his polite talk, “Professor Cha, you’re too kind. Even if you didn’t give me these things, I’d still work hard for you.”

“No bonuses, house, plane tickets, or new Guangnao? Okay, if that’s what you want, then no problem.” Ye Chui waved his hand.

Roberta: “...”
