Looking at the character designs Fang Xi had drawn, Ye Chui thought, "Fang Xi's art style resembles Akira Toriyama's. Let's try having him draw Dragon Ball!"
Dragon Ball is a legendary manga. Having this as the first project would give Ye Chui confidence for a strong debut.
Ye Chui then told Fang Xi, "I’ve decided on our first manga."
"What is it?" Fang Xi asked eagerly.
"It's called Dragon Ball. The story revolves around seven Dragon Balls. When someone gathers all seven, they summon a dragon who grants any wish..."
Ye Chui briefly explained the plot and characters like Son Goku, Bulma, and Oolong.
"Sounds interesting," Fang Xi's eyes sparkled. "Did they finally gather all the Dragon Balls? Did Goku wish to become the world's greatest fighter?"
"The Dragon Balls were gathered, but the wish wasn’t made by Goku," Ye Chui smiled.
"Who was it then?" Fang Xi asked.
"It was Oolong."
"Oolong? What did he wish for?"
Ye Chui stifled a laugh, "He wished for a pair of women's underwear."
"Pfft..." Fang Xi burst out laughing. "After all that effort, he wished for underwear?"
"The Dragon Balls scatter and turn to stone after each use. Goku and his friends continue searching for them throughout the series. The early part is more comedic, but it later becomes all about intense battles and grand adventures. But for now, let’s focus on the early parts." Ye Chui explained.
Dragon Ball is an exciting and intricate story. Despite parts of it being commercially driven, the details and twists are vividly memorable to Ye Chui. Reproducing it would be no problem.
Fang Xi, fascinated by the new storytelling form, exclaimed, "This manga format is incredible!"
"Yeah, the final product will be even more interesting," Ye Chui reassured him. "Remember, manga doesn’t need to be too realistic. Stick to the character designs we made."
"Got it."
Fang Xi, who usually was lazy, now worked tirelessly on the manga, day and night, even skipping baths, much to Ye Chui's bewilderment. How did someone with such dedication still manage to remain overweight?
During this time, Fang Nan continued to visit Ye Chui’s room to help him write music, listening to him sing and transcribing the songs. Ye Chui enjoyed this activity, and apart from choosing sweet songs for his sister, he also wrote down other catchy songs like "Love and Betrayal" and "The Cowboy's Whip" (yes, I know it’s called "Taming Horses...").
However, finding someone to sing these catchy tunes was a dilemma—his sister couldn’t sing them.
