Chapter 30: Did You Think a Disabled Person Couldn't Get a Gorgeous Woman?
Ye Cui absolutely did not expect his singing to cause such a huge reaction. Seeing the emotional expressions on everyone's faces, Ye Cui immediately felt uneasy. Although he managed to stay somewhat on key, his singing technique was almost nonexistent. How could such a terrible performance move so many people?
"Nan Nan, come over here," Ye Cui quietly signaled to Fang Nan. She walked over with a dazed look, her eyes filled with emotion. The singing was so beautiful. Could it be a song Ye Cui composed based on his own experiences? He... must be a person with a story.
"Chui Chui, your singing was amazing. Did you compose this song yourself? I've never heard such a beautiful song before," Fang Nan whispered, her eyes misty as she hurriedly wiped them.
"Don't worry about that, just push me out of here," Ye Cui said softly, taking advantage of the moment when everyone was still moved. It was time to leave before it was too late.
Fang Nan hesitated briefly, then nodded and began pushing Ye Cui's wheelchair towards the exit. Fang Xi and Jian Fan, seeing this, followed suit. The other patrons, still overwhelmed by the song "999 Roses," remained in a state of emotional shock. Watching Ye Cui being pushed out of the restaurant, they didn't immediately realize he was trying to make a quick escape.
But soon, the elderly man, Fang Lao, understood what was happening. He rushed out, shouting, "Don't go, wait! Catch him, don't let him get away!"
If one didn't know the context, they might think Ye Cui was a criminal on the run. With Fang Lao's shout, everyone else snapped out of their stupor and began chasing Ye Cui as well, creating quite the chaotic scene.
"Shit, let's move faster," Ye Cui urged Fang Nan. He had no interest in music. The whole piano episode was just for fun, but he didn't expect such a dramatic reaction.
Fang Nan pushed the wheelchair quickly along the road, glancing back to see an elderly man leading the chase, shouting, "Don't let him get away, catch him!"
"Fang Xi, stop them," Fang Nan instructed.
"Don't worry, sis. You go ahead with Chui Chui," Fang Xi replied, bravely standing his ground to block the pursuers, pulling Jian Fan along with him.
Fang Nan continued to push Ye Cui's wheelchair, running down the street until they were out of sight of the chasers. She leaned against Ye Cui's wheelchair, panting softly, not realizing her chest was almost pressing against Ye Cui's head, making his breathing a bit heavier.
"Chui Chui, why did we run?" Fang Nan asked, puzzled. "That song was amazing; they were clearly moved and that's why they chased you."
"I have no interest in singing and nothing to say to them," Ye Cui shrugged. He liked listening to music, but singing wasn't his thing.
"What was that song called?" Fang Nan asked softly, with a hint of tenderness.
"999 Roses," Ye Cui replied.
Fang Nan repeated the name, thinking it was incredibly poignant. Her face flushed slightly, imagining Ye Cui must have written the song after a passionate love affair.
"Huh, how did we end up here?" Ye Cui suddenly exclaimed, noticing a large sign nearby. It read "Breakpoint"—the nightclub where Ye Cui's sister, Ye Ling, was performing with her band.
Earlier at the restaurant, Ye Cui had thought about checking on his sister. Now that they were here, he couldn't pass up the chance. He told Fang Nan, "Let's go into this bar. I want to see Xiao Ling."
Fang Nan, having never been to a nightclub, was curious and agreed, pushing Ye Cui's wheelchair into Breakpoint. The bar was dimly lit, and as they entered, they were hit by a cacophony of noise. Well, what this world called music.
Under the dim lights, they could see a small stage with a few people dressed in flamboyant, non-mainstream outfits performing what seemed like rock music. But the quality was not something Ye Cui could appreciate.
Rock music had also started developing early in this world, but it lacked leading figures, making it a niche genre not accepted by the mainstream, only performed in places like this bar.
Ye Cui squinted at the performers on stage, and sure enough, Ye Ling was among them! However, her current image was vastly different from the good girl Ye Cui remembered. She wore a yellow wig, heavy makeup, and a revealing outfit. Yet, compared to the other completely non-mainstream members, Ye Ling's appearance was relatively moderate. She stood in front of an electronic keyboard, playing earnestly but seemed constrained, unable to let loose in this environment.
The noise battered Ye Cui's ears, and he could tell his sister was not comfortable with this performance style. And she definitely did not belong on this kind of stage!
"Chui Chui, is that your sister?" Fang Nan asked, pointing at Ye Ling.
"How did you figure that out?" Ye Cui asked, curious.
"She stands out. So pure. You can tell at a glance," Fang Nan explained.
"Yeah, I think so too," Ye Cui nodded. Despite her non-mainstream attire, Ye Ling's pure and reserved nature was unmistakable.
Ye Cui made up his mind. No matter what, he couldn't let his sister continue to degrade herself on this stage. He had to take her away today!
Since the band was still performing, Ye Cui didn't want to interrupt, so he decided to wait until the performance ended. Meanwhile, he and Fang Nan moved to the bar to wait, ordering a couple of beers to pass the time.
Soon, many people started approaching Fang Nan, trying to strike up conversations—after all, bars were prime spots for men to hit on women. Fang Nan, initially responding politely, became impatient as more people approached. She started pointing to Ye Cui in his wheelchair, indicating that she was already taken.
This elicited groans of disappointment from the crowd, with many throwing jealous and envious glances at Ye Cui. Feeling smug, Ye Cui thought, did they think a disabled person couldn't get a beautiful woman?
After waiting for about half an hour, the band finally finished their set and took a break in a room reserved for performers.
"Let's go," Ye Cui quickly told Fang Nan. She nodded, pushing the wheelchair towards the room. Just as they reached the door, they heard a harsh woman's voice from inside—
"Ye Ling, what’s your problem? I told you to cooperate with us during the performance. Do you understand what cooperation means? We're keeping you in the band because we think you're worth it. But if this is the best you can do, you should just get out!"
