Chapter 17: Borrowing Your Picture
“Huh!? You’re a cripple?” Jian Fan blurted out involuntarily.
Hearing Jian Fan's exclamation, Ye Cui's expression changed slightly.
No one with a physical disability likes being called a cripple, and Ye Cui was no exception. However, he quickly regained his composure and explained calmly, “I was in a car accident not long ago, which left my legs paralyzed. But I believe I can soon earn enough money to treat my leg injuries.”
“Heh... I believe you can,” Jian Fan said awkwardly, trying to cover up his initial reaction. But inside, he was sneering. Although there were muscle vitality potions that could treat leg injuries, a single course cost three million, and it required at least three courses for a complete recovery. That’s nearly ten million—a huge sum. How could an ordinary person possibly make that much money? Relying on some so-called game like Link Link? What a dreamer!
Fang Nan, fearing Ye Cui would be upset, hurriedly said, “Professor X, you’ll definitely be able to heal your legs.”
“That’s right, Brother X. You’re so smart. You can easily make a million with just a few games,” Fang Xi chimed in, his admiration for Professor X palpable.
Ye Cui chuckled, “Let’s hope so.”
Ye Cui felt confident. The success of Link Link had shown him the way: with a platform, earning a million was child's play.
Seeing Ye Cui wasn't offended by Jian Fan's earlier comment, Fang Nan pushed Ye Cui's wheelchair around, giving him a tour of the studio. She acted as if Ye Cui was already part of the team.
Ye Cui was pleased with the environment and asked, “Are there only three of you in the studio?”
“There are four of us in total, but one is in the room upstairs,” Fang Nan pointed to the staircase beside them. “She rarely comes downstairs and doesn’t interact much, but she’s the best programmer among us. This place is actually her home. Oh, and her name is Bai Miyun—Bai as in white, Mi as in search, and Yun as in cloud.”
“Bai Miyun?” Ye Cui repeated the unusual name.
His curiosity was piqued. A programming expert and a recluse—these attributes, combined with such an unusual name, created an air of mystery.
“Professor X, let’s talk about you joining our studio,” Jian Fan interjected, adopting a businesslike demeanor.
From the start, Jian Fan had been against Ye Cui joining. He hadn’t expected Fang Xi to actually bring Ye Cui here, let alone that he was disabled. Was Jian Fan supposed to take care of him?
Jian Fan spoke with a slightly cold tone, “Professor X, given your online reputation, I’m delighted to have you in our studio. But we need to set some ground rules. As for your work capabilities… Well, you can see our studio isn’t that big, so we need to be cautious. I hope to get a better understanding of your skills.”
“What do you mean? Are you doubting Brother X’s abilities?” Fang Xi immediately protested, and Fang Nan frowned.
“I’m just looking out for the studio,” Jian Fan defended.
He pointed to the nearby computer, where a screen displayed a complex string of code. Jian Fan continued, “Professor X, this is a section of code for an enterprise backend management system login interface. There’s an issue with it. Can you help identify the problem?”
Is this a test?
Ye Cui was taken aback by Jian Fan’s words. Fang Nan and Fang Xi were embarrassed, realizing Jian Fan had prepared a test without informing them.
Ye Cui glanced at the screen. His programming knowledge was basic, and while he could vaguely understand the code, identifying the issue was beyond his current skills.
So, he shook his head, “I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
Jian Fan’s face showed a hint of a sneer. He had suspected Ye Cui lacked real talent, and this test confirmed it.
Feigning difficulty, Jian Fan said, “Well, Professor X, I’m afraid I have to apologize. After all, our studio needs to make a profit...”
“Making a profit? No problem,” Ye Cui interrupted.
He could tell Jian Fan didn’t want him in the studio, but Ye Cui wasn’t going to be dismissed so easily. He smiled and said, “I can provide various game ideas. I guarantee each one will be better than Link Link, even many times better.”
“Professor X, isn’t that a bit of an exaggeration?” Jian Fan dropped his pretense and bluntly said, “Link Link was a huge success, but it’s hard to say if you can create another game that’s even better.”
“So, if I can create another game better than Link Link, I can stay in the studio, right?” Ye Cui asked.
“Correct,” Jian Fan nodded. “Our studio values fairness. If you really have the skills, we’ll follow your lead in future software development. But the question is, can you?”
“I can prove it to you,” Ye Cui said confidently.
“How?” Jian Fan asked.
“I can create a game in no time,” Ye Cui replied with a smile. He looked at Fang Xi and Fang Nan, “But I’ll need your help.”
“Us?” Fang Nan and Fang Xi exchanged glances and then nodded. Fang Xi said, “Brother X, what do you need us to do?”
Ye Cui turned his wheelchair to face Fang Nan and aimed his wrist at her—the advanced tech of the portable computer included a camera function.
Realizing Ye Cui wanted to take her picture, Fang Nan blushed slightly and posed instinctively.
With a click, the photo was taken.
Ye Cui smiled, “Fang Nan, I’ll borrow your picture.”
“Huh?” Fang Nan was taken aback but shyly nodded, “Alright.”
Jian Fan's face darkened. How dare Professor X take a photo of Fang Nan so casually, and she even cooperated… He usually had to sneak photos!
Then Ye Cui called Fang Xi over, whispering a few instructions in his ear.
Fang Xi’s eyes lit up gradually.
Finally, he nodded to Ye Cui, “Brother X, this software program is easy. I can finish it in half an hour… No, ten minutes.”
“Thank you,” Ye Cui said. He realized that creating this mini-game by himself would take days. Collaborating with a programming expert was much more efficient.
“No problem,” Fang Xi said excitedly, sitting at the computer. “Brother X, this idea is fantastic. It’ll be super fun!”
