### Chapter 146: Wrangler
"Mr. Gu..."
Han Lie wanted to say more but was stopped by Black Falcon, who shook his head and whispered, "The fact that Mr. Gu agreed to consider it is already a huge favor to us—don’t push your luck!"
The implication was clear: don't overstep.
Though Han Lie was unwilling, he understood Black Falcon’s reasoning and sighed dejectedly.
Gu Chen was the biggest backing he could currently rely on.
Now that they had a feud with the Northwest Wolves, if they couldn't quickly find protection, their identities would soon be exposed.
"Mr. Gu, no matter what your final decision is, we are eternally grateful for your life-saving medicine!"
After Black Falcon finished speaking sincerely, he pulled Han Lie and Hunting Eagle away.
Gu Chen observed their every move with interest but said nothing, making no immediate judgments.
He then got into his car and drove away.
Upon returning to the Jade Pavilion, Gu Chen checked the bedroom and saw that Frost Chill was sleeping soundly, which was a relief, so he took a blanket and went to the guest room.
The next day, the news of Li Yukun hosting a banquet that evening caused a huge stir in the high society circles of Lin’an.
"Is Second Master Li hosting this grand banquet to challenge Miss Liu?"
"Where did you hear that? I heard he wants to connect with the Liu family through Miss Liu!"
"Come on, none of you are right. Reliable sources say that the top brass is favoring Lin’an with new policies, and both of them are here to seize the opportunity!"
Speculations abounded, each more outlandish than the last.
The buzz was no less than that of Liu Hanyan's previous banquet.
As expected, Liu Hanyan also received an invitation from Li Yukun.
"Did Li Yukun invite you?" Liu Hanyan asked Gu Chen over the phone.
"He’s targeting me, so if he didn't invite me, who would he perform for?"
Gu Chen's tone was casual, as if he didn't care at all.
Liu Hanyan admired his courage but couldn't help worrying, "Are you going? Li Yukun is up to no good and might cause trouble for you at the banquet!"
"Of course I'm going. Free food and drinks, why not? Besides, I want to see what tricks he has up his sleeve," Gu Chen said nonchalantly.
Knowing full well the danger, he still chose to face it head-on, which was just like him.
Liu Hanyan smiled, feeling her worries were indeed unnecessary. "Then I’ll pick you up tonight?"
"Let’s go separately," Gu Chen considered. "This time is different from the last. If you go with me, it might implicate the Liu family unnecessarily. There’s no need for that."
After a moment of silence, Liu Hanyan agreed, albeit regretfully. "See you there then."
Gu Chen hummed in acknowledgment and hung up the phone.
At that moment, footsteps sounded upstairs.
Frost Chill, fully recovered, appeared at the staircase, her eyes sharp as knives, staring at Gu Chen.
Gu Chen glanced at her and said coldly, "If you’re well, leave. Stop hanging around me."
"I won’t leave until I kill you!" Frost Chill remained determined.
"Putting aside that I saved your life, even if I sit here motionless, how confident are you in killing me?" Gu Chen reasoned.
"You..."
Frost Chill’s face flushed with frustration, her fists clenched tightly, unable to respond.
Though unwilling to admit it, she had indeed received life-saving help from Gu Chen. And as he said, even if he didn’t move, she wasn’t confident she could kill him.
If only she had half the wits of her sister, Zhiqiu, she wouldn’t be this stubborn.
Gu Chen shook his head helplessly. "If you don’t want to leave, fine, I will!"
He grabbed his car keys and headed out.
"Even if you escape to the ends of the earth, I won’t let you go," Frost Chill threatened coldly.
Gu Chen looked at her like she was an idiot.
If she weren’t Zhiqiu’s sister, he would’ve made sure she understood the harsh realities of life.
"There’s food in the fridge. Cook if you’re hungry."
"You can leave anytime you want."
"Also, believe it or not, I never did anything to harm your sister."
As the door closed behind him, Frost Chill was left puzzled, mulling over Gu Chen’s last words.
His actions made her doubt her purpose for the first time.
"Could it be that my sister’s death really had nothing to do with him?"
"Impossible!"
"I saw it all with my own eyes; he’s trying to mislead me!"
"Yes, that must be it. I can't be swayed by him, but..."
"No buts. I must stay firm in my resolve to avenge my sister!"
Frost Chill clenched her fists tightly, reminding herself not to forget her purpose.
Later, Gu Chen went to the Fuliu Pharmaceutical Company and stayed there until evening before heading to the banquet with Wu Anqi.
For reasons unknown, possibly to show off or simply to boast, Li Yukun had rented the entire Linjiang Pavilion.
This move alone cost millions.
"The Li family is too extravagant! The setup is even grander than Miss Liu’s last time!" Wu Anqi admired the scene outside the window.
"Just a nouveau riche act. If there's a chance, I’ll show you what true luxury is," Gu Chen said offhandedly.
"Are you joking? What is true luxury?" Wu Anqi tilted her head in curiosity.
"Shock without sound can be more powerful than any loud display," Gu Chen smiled.
"You mean the most impactful flex is the subtle one, right?" Wu Anqi translated.
"Not a bad interpretation," Gu Chen affirmed.
"I’m really curious now," Wu Anqi’s interest was piqued.
As they spoke, Gu Chen parked the car.
While they were chatting and walking in, a modified Jeep Wrangler, like an unbridled horse, sped past them without slowing down.
Its speed was probably at least eighty miles per hour.
Eighty might not be much on the road, but this was a parking lot with many people walking toward the hotel. Wranglers are not known for their maneuverability.
An accident seemed inevitable.
"Ah~"
Wu Anqi pointed at a figure frozen in the middle of the road, exclaiming, "That looks like Yu Wei!"
Gu Chen squinted and saw it was indeed her.
"Oh no, she’s going to get hit!"
Wu Anqi panicked and began to pace frantically.
Gu Chen frowned and dashed out like lightning.
At this critical moment, Chen Yuwei was paralyzed with fear, her mind blank.
Just as she was about to be hit, a tall figure swooped in, holding her close, and with a light step, jumped off the ground, landing on the Wrangler’s hood with a loud "bang."
"Screech~"
The engine beneath the hood hissed, emitting white smoke.
The sudden resistance sent the driver reeling, dazed, as the airbags deployed.
