LBWC Chapter 0004 Building a Shelter

"Oh my, I'm so thirsty, I feel like I'm dehydrated!"  

"Seriously? Is it that easy to get lost in the forest?"  

"It's true. I got lost in the mountains behind my house when I was a kid. It took my family and neighbors over four hours to find me. I can only imagine it's easier to get lost in a primeval forest!"  

"In that case, the streamer is really impressive!"  

"Angel just gifted the streamer a grilled fish! - Streamer, be careful, make sure to stay safe!"  

Chen Xu felt extremely happy seeing the barrage of comments flying across the live stream. After all, the forty or so people watching were real, genuine viewers.  

Many other streamers might claim to have tens of thousands of viewers, but there would only be a few sparse comments.  

In reality, those were just streamers using their money to buy virtual popularity, generating fake viewers through software. Despite the room showing thousands of viewers, there might only be a dozen or so people watching.  

"Thank you all for your concern. As of now, I'm still safe. But if anything were to happen to me, I hope you won't be too sad. I'm just a pioneer dedicating a small effort to exploring nature's wonders for humanity!" Chen Xu spoke passionately into the camera.  

"Haha! The streamer is really laying it on thick, causing me ten thousand points of real damage!"  

"The streamer speaks with such righteousness, it moves me to put down my knife."  

"The commenter above is too kind. I've already put down my rocket launcher."  

"I believe the streamer could rely on their looks, but instead, they choose talent. That's true love for nature!"  

As he watched the audience joking in the comments, Chen Xu chuckled but then glanced at the sky, his expression turning serious. "Judging by the sun's position, it's nearly five o'clock, approaching dusk. Night falls quickly in the mountains, especially in September, early autumn. The temperature difference between day and night is significant, reaching highs of 18 degrees Celsius during the day and dipping below zero at night. So, we need to find a camping spot quickly!"  

With that, he quickened his pace, searching for a suitable camping spot.  

Fortunately, this was a wilderness forest, the ground covered in pine needles and fallen leaves, with relatively low grass around, making it easy to traverse.  

If it were a tropical rainforest, not only would the ground be muddy and difficult to walk on, but the surrounding vegetation would be dense, taller than people. Without a professional machete or bush knife, it would be impossible to go far.  

After walking for a while, a message inexplicably popped into Chen Xu's mind: "Hiking Experience +1".  

Chen Xu paused, then realized, could it be that I'm actually using skills while hiking?  

He accessed his skill panel with his mind and checked the hiking skill.  

Sure enough, there was an experience bar behind it, currently showing: 1/500.  

It seemed that not only attributes could be increased through training, even skills could be too. This system was truly user-friendly!  

Chen Xu continued walking and finally found a less dense area of trees. He addressed the audience, "When building a camping site, we must pay attention to two things: warmth and dryness. The most important thing is ease of construction, to save energy!"  

"The streamer is right, but you haven't brought anything with you, how are you going to build it?"  

"Yeah, you can't just go chopping wood now, and the streamer doesn't even have a knife!"  

"Let's see how the streamer manages to build it!"  

"The streamer should just give up. It's not dark yet, better hurry down the mountain!"  

Chen Xu didn't heed the audience's barrage of comments but instead walked up to a dead tree and squatted down. "Actually, there are countless methods for building a camping site in the wilderness, one of which is called a wreckage shelter, which is very simple."  

With that said, he walked up to the dead tree, lifted it, and dragged it over, propping it up against a fork in a pine tree.  

This way, a right-angled triangle was formed between the dead tree and the pine tree.  

"As you can see, the main structure of the shelter is already set up. Now, we need to break off these small branches underneath to prevent any injuries. As for the branches and leaves on the sides, we can leave them as supports!"

Chen Xu explained while laying down a thick layer of nearby fallen leaves and pine needles underneath. "As for the sides, we need to find some moss, dead leaves, and mud to make the roof!"  

"Since I've left the branches on both sides intact, we can easily pile up some loose branches on top. Then, we can easily lay down the moss and dead leaves on top, just like this!"  

As Chen Xu explained to the audience, he gently spread the moss, mixed with soil, upwards. With the moss roots anchoring it, the soil was less likely to scatter.  

Then, Chen Xu picked up a considerable amount of soil and spread it on top, sprinkling it with fallen leaves.  

"Alright, a rough wreckage shelter is now built. What do you think?"  

Chen Xu controlled the drone with his mind, circling around the shelter and intentionally filming the inside.  

"Wow, the streamer is amazing, actually building a shelter from scratch!"  

"So impressive! I think it's probably more comfortable than a tent!"  

"Those who just joined, the picture quality is so clear. Where is this, is it really a primeval forest?"  

"Yes, the streamer just built a shelter from scratch!"  

"Amazing!"  

"Streamer: Please tell me loudly, who else is there?"  

"Fengzhong Boy gifted the streamer two grilled fish! - The streamer is so capable!"  

"Ye Rang Ni Guandeng gifted the streamer 600 bamboo! - The streamer is so awesome, a skilled builder!"  

Chen Xu smiled and thanked each viewer who sent gifts. At this point, with the continuous influx of passersby and the previous audience, there were already one or two hundred people, with over a hundred followers.  

"As you can see, I've laid down a thick layer of soil and moss on the roof. Although the temperature in the mountains at night may approach zero degrees, the shelter can maintain a temperature about 10 degrees higher than outside, ensuring warmth!"  

"An important thing I did earlier was to lay down a thick layer of pine needles as a bed inside the shelter. Because the body loses a lot of heat through the ground, these needles can prevent heat loss and provide all-around warmth."  

Seeing more and more people coming in, Chen Xu felt motivated to explain some wilderness knowledge. With the wilderness skills obtained from the system's beginner's gift pack reaching the top level: Lv5, he could effortlessly talk about outdoor basics. Coupled with Bear Grylls' conversational style, this livestream was truly captivating, with viewers rarely leaving once they joined!

Chen Xu saw the discussion in the barrage and immediately lifted his hand to look. Sure enough, there was a black-red, worm-like creature, about three to four centimeters in size, with legs covering the underside of its body.
